Wrinkle cream graveyard? Quit buying OTC products!
It seems you can’t watch TV anymore without a commercial from one of the big, OTC brands promoting a wrinkle cream or another type of anti-aging product. The one that stands out to me is the “wrinkle cream graveyard”. Why does a graveyard even exist? Easy answer…you’re buying the wrong product.
I can’t even begin to tell you how much advertising dollars are spent on those commercials from Neutrogena, Roc, Olay and the others. I’m sure it’s a lot. They are paying for celebrity spokespeople, air time, production, etc…it all adds up. But more importantly for them, it makes you buy their products.
So what is the difference between the products you find in the aisles of Target, Walgreens and CVS vs. those that are prescribed from a professional skin care consultant? The answer…plenty!
First, the medical grade lines are spending their money on actual clinical research. Their studies and results–all real. Please understand, they are regulated by the FDA while the OTC brands are not. FDA regulations apply because they are using higher concentrates of active ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, retinoids, ceramide and medical grades of vitamins C and E. While an OTC brand can claim to have these active ingredients, they aren’t near the levels needed to actually work effectively. As a result, there is no FDA regulation so they can make all the claims in the world as to how well their products work.
Next, it helps to know the difference between epidermis and dermis penetration. The epidermis is the outer layer of your skin. The dermis is the level below your skin surface where the active ingredients actually do their work. OTC products do NOT contain enough active ingredient to penetrate the dermis so they aren’t really getting to the root cause of your skin concerns. Medical grade products are penetrating that dermis level and really targeting the source of the problem.
Finally, skip the trip to the “graveyard”. Any reputable, professional skin care provider will give you a complimentary skin care consultation and recommend the product(s) best suited for you. They will also stand behind their recommendations, 100%. While the medical grade products may cost a little more, they are well worth it in the long run. Remember, you are paying for FDA-regulated, clinically-proven product, not celebrity endorsements.
