Semaglutide vs Ozempic vs Wegovy vs Mounjaro: What’s the Difference?

Semaglutide is the name of the medication that is used for medical weight loss, with Ozempic and Wegovy being the name-brand versions of Semaglutide. Ozempic contains slightly less of the Semaglutide medication than Wegovy, with Wegovy just containing a higher concentration of Semaglutide per injection. Wegovy injections are more gradually increased in dosage, often increased from 0.5mg to 1.0mg to 1.7mg to 2.4mg as the maximum dose, whereas Ozempic dosages only increased from 0.5mg to 1.0mg to 2.0mg at the maximum dosage. Both medications are administered on a weekly basis and come with the same potential risks and side effects. Mounjaro is the outlier of this group, being the name brand for a weight loss medication called Tirzepatide but the medication works fairly similarly to Semaglutide, coming with almost the same potential side effects and risks, and being administered in the same manner just in higher doses.

Both Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) were originally approved for use in treating type 2 diabetes but were quickly realized to provide very effective weight loss results in patients who are obese or overweight with weight-related health conditions. Ozempic and Mounjaro are both still technically only FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes but are very often prescribed for off-label use as a weight loss medication by healthcare providers due to their efficacy and safety. The brand Wegovy has been specifically created with the intention for sole use as part of medical weight loss treatments, which is why it differs slightly from Ozempic, being fully approved as a weight loss medication. All three brands (meaning both Semaglutide and Tirzepatide) are very often recommended for use as a weight loss treatment, all providing their own impressive benefits, so even though a couple of the options are only technically approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, they all work fairly similar have been proven as safe and effective as weight loss medication.

Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro all provide fairly similar results and come with very similar side effects, but will differ slightly in dosage. Ozempic and Wegovy have almost the same dosages, so there won’t be a noticeable difference there, but Mounjaro requires a much higher dosage to achieve the same results, starting at 2.5mg weekly to maxing out at 15mg weekly. They are all subcutaneous weekly injections so the treatment will look fairly similar, and all of them will gradually increase in dosage to ensure that the patient does not experience severe side effects. It does sometimes happen that one type of medication (often Semaglutide) becomes harder to get due to medicine shortages, in which case treatments of Ozempic or Wegovy will need to wait until there are sufficient supplies. At the end of the day, it will be up to the physician and the patient to determine which medication is most likely to provide the most success for the weight loss program while remaining the safest option throughout treatment.

Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are very effective at helping patients shed excess weight, they are all considered to be long-term weight loss treatments, often taking at least one year before patients are able to reach a healthy, manageable weight. Administration of these medications may be recommended even after this point to make maintaining this new weight more manageable and to prevent weight gain once the treatment has stopped. While the goal is that the patient is able to maintain a healthy balance of diet and exercise in order to sustain the weight loss results, it is possible for some patients to experience some weight gain after stopping the medication, so it depends on the patient if the results will be long-lasting after the medication is no longer being administered.
